LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — After a wave of criticism last week, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) announced Thursday that they have postponed a June 30 consumer session.

The session was to hear public comments on Southwest Gas Corp.’s application to adjust rates for natural gas in Nevada.

“The PUCN and SWG are working to secure larger venues that can better accommodate the number of consumers making public comments,” according to the Thursday announcement. When a date and location are determined, a formal notice will be issued, PUCN said.

The Nevada Environmental Justice Coalition slammed the PUCN on June 16 after people were shut out of a hearing on NV Energy’s controversial daily demand charge. Only 50 people were allowed to attend. The group cited a pattern of obstruction and said they were documenting the problem, listing some of their complaints:

  • – The session scheduled in the middle of the workday excluded the working-class Nevadans most affected by rising utility bills.
  • – The attendance cap wasn’t announced until people arrived on site.
  • – The building’s overflow room could have accommodated dozens of residents left waiting outside with temperatures reaching 110 degrees. Residents were left waiting in the heat for nearly an hour, and an ambulance was called for members of the public with heat exhaustion.
  • – The PUCN’s decision not to use the overflow room during the meeting limited public comment.

Consumer sessions on controversial matters have outgrown the PUCN facilities at 9075 W. Diablo Drive in the southwest valley.
